RESUME JOHN OYEDEMI (b. 1966)

John Oyedemi is a Nigerian artist based in Jos and one of the most prolific painters to emerge from the Zaria Art School tradition. For more than two decades, he has sustained an exceptionally rigorous studio practice, earning a reputation among peers and collectors as a “master” painter for both his consistency and technical authority. His work is immediately recognisable for its vibrant chromatic intensity, dynamic linear structures, and pronounced textural depth.

At the core of Oyedemi’s artistic vision lies an engagement with ceremony, movement, and collective memory. His practice centres on the Durbar—an equestrian ceremonial tradition in Northern Nigeria inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Rather than rendering the spectacle descriptively, Oyedemi translates procession into structured spatial composition. Through rhythmic repetition, layered application, and controlled compositional grids, he transforms movement into painterly architecture.

Working primarily in oil, he applies high-density pigment and impasto techniques to construct tactile, almost sculptural surfaces. Paint is built up in successive strata, generating depth and material presence. His organic linear language—at times recalling the structural discipline associated with Piet Mondrian—organises colour into dynamic networks that balance control and vitality. These lines are not merely formal devices; they serve as conduits of energy, directing the viewer’s gaze across fields of saturated reds, blues, and earth tones.

In recent years, Oyedemi has increasingly explored the use of white space, punctuating dominant tonal fields with restrained intervals of light. Bluish tonalities in varying degrees create atmospheric tension, while areas of visual pause heighten the rhythmic density of surrounding pigment. This interplay between fullness and void introduces a contemplative dimension to works otherwise defined by chromatic exuberance.

Oyedemi holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Jos and a degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, one of Nigeria’s most influential art institutions. Beyond his studio practice, he serves as Head of the Art Department at the University of Jos and is Editor-in-Chief of the University of Jos Fine and Applied Arts Journal. His academic engagement informs his conceptual rigour, positioning his work at the intersection of painterly mastery, cultural scholarship, and sustained formal experimentation.
