RESUME JOHN FRANCIS SESAY

John Francis Sesay is a Sierra Leonean artist based in Freetown whose practice is dedicated to the preservation of urban memory. Working primarily in watercolour, he documents the architectural and cultural heritage of his city, translating its historic wooden houses and civic landmarks into luminous studies of light, atmosphere, and permanence. For Sesay, painting is an act of safeguarding collective memory. His work reflects the conviction that attention itself is a form of preservation - that by observing, recording, and reinterpreting the built environment, one can honour the histories and identities embedded within it.

At the core of his artistic vision is Freetown’s iconic bod ose, traditional wooden Krio houses that embody layers of social and cultural history. Through controlled washes, structured composition, and a refined command of transparency, Sesay transforms architectural form into contemplative visual narratives. His compositions balance precision and fluidity, allowing watercolour’s inherent unpredictability to coexist with disciplined draftsmanship. The result is work that feels both documentary and poetic: grounded in place, yet resonant beyond it.

Sesay developed his practice under the mentorship of modern art pioneer Louise Metzger, whose guidance played a formative role in shaping his artistic direction. His technical formation was further informed by the influence of Hassan Bangura, known for his architectural renderings and attention to Sierra Leone’s urban landscape. Building on this legacy, Sesay expanded the expressive potential of watercolour, deepening its emotional and atmospheric range while maintaining structural clarity.

His paintings are distinguished by their subtle modulation of light and tone. Rather than depicting architecture as static object, Sesay imbues buildings with presence and memory. Weathered facades, balconies, and streetscapes emerge as quiet witnesses to time, resilience, and transformation. In doing so, he positions his work within a broader discourse on heritage, identity, and continuity in rapidly changing urban contexts.

Through his sustained focus on Freetown’s architectural heritage, John Francis Sesay has established himself as a significant voice in contemporary Sierra Leonean art. His practice stands at the intersection of documentation and reflection, capturing not only the physical structures of a city, but the spirit and lived histories they contain.
